Context

  • Recently, APEDA conducted a webinar on “Export Promotion of Tissue Culture Plants such as Foliage, Live Plants, Cut Flowers, and Planting Material” with Department of Biotechnology (DBT) accredited tissue culture laboratories spread across India. The aim is to boost exports of tissue culture plant.

 

 About APEDA

  • Agriculture and processed food production export Development Authority (APEDA) is an apex body that promotes export trade of agricultural products in India.
  • Set-up by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, APEDA was formed under the act passed by parliament in 1985.
  • The products specified under the APEDA ACT are called schedule products and exporters of such scheduled products are required register under APEDA.

 

Functions of APEDA Authorities

Authorities are assigned with functions such as:

  1. Promotion of export-oriented production and development of the Scheduled products
  2. Setting the standards and specifications for the scheduled products
  3. Registration of exporters of the scheduled products on payment of required fees
  4. Improving packaging and marketing of the Scheduled products
  5. Carrying out an inspection of products for the purpose of ensuring the quality of such products
  6. Training in various aspects of the industries connected with the scheduled products
  7. Development of industries relating to the scheduled products and undertaking surveys, feasibility studies etc
  8. Collection of statistics from the owners of factories or establishments and publication of such statistics

Products under APEDA

  • APEDA is mandated with the responsibility of export promotion and development of the following scheduled products:
  1. Fruits, vegetables and their products
  2. Meat and meat products
  3. Poultry and poultry products
  4. Dairy products
  5. Confectionery biscuits and Bakery products
  6. Honey, jaggery and sugar products
  7. Cocoa and its products, Chocolates of all kinds.
  8. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
  9. Cereal and cereal products
  10. Groundnuts peanuts and walnuts
  11. Pickles, papads and chutney
  12. Guar gum
  13. Floriculture and its products
  14. Herbal and Medicinal plants
  • The above product categories are almost covered 50% of all Agriculture products exported from India.
  • APEDA has also been entrusted with the responsibility to monitor import of sugar.
