Context

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, water levels of several rivers, including Beki River, are rising due to torrential rains in Assam and nearby areas.
The water level is now above danger level mark.

Other Details

The flood situation affected approximately 20 lakh people in 20 districts.
In Lakhimpur district several houses are damaged.
The water level is also inundating to new areas.
45 revenue villages of several districts in Assam are impacted

Assam State Disaster Management Authority Report

Nalbari district (44,707 people) is most affected which is followed by Baksa, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur and Barpeta.
In these district 07 lakh domestic animals, and poultry have also been affected.
4 embankments, 72 roads, and 7 bridges were also damaged due to these flood waters.
14 relief camps and 17 relief distribution centres are set up.
In the affected district more than 2000 people are given shelter in relief camps.
Various organizations and services like NDRF, SDRF, and Fire & Emergency Services have started the rescue works.

Beki River

This river originates from Mountain Reserve Forest at Mathanguri.
Beki river is also known as Kurissu River in Bhutan.
A right bank tributary of river Brahmputra, it flows in north to south direction.
After crossing a length of about 85 km, it joins Manas.
The total area drained by this river is 26,243 Sq.km.
In Assam state, it passes through the village of Barpeta and Chairang.
Nearest National highway close to this river is NH- 31.

For many communities it also serves as a mode of transport and a source of livelihood.
It turns dangerous during monsoon and has various concerns like -
- At Narayanguri frequent damage of embankment along the river,
- Frequent floods in the lower part
- Bank erosion at Chafakamar village and nearby areas
