Context:

Recently The Karnataka Board of Waqfs has identified 17 monuments inside the historic Bidar Fort in Karnataka as its property.

About Bidar Fort:

It is situated in the Bidar city of northern Karnataka.

The Bidar Fort dates back over 500 years, starting with the reign of the Western Chalukya dynasty.

The Bidar Fort was built by Sultan Ala-Ud Din Bahman and renovated by Sultan Ahmed Shah Wali of the Bahmani dynasty as he shifted his capital from Gulbarga to Bidar in 1430

The fort was built using trap rock and in the wall stone and mortar had been used with a lofty dome at the entrance gate.

The fort includes: Islamic and Persian architecture, 7 main entrances, 37 bastions (Balcony like structures), Mosques and mahals, more than 30 Islamic monuments.

Dynasties Bidar Fort came under: Bahmani Kingdom, Bijapur Sultanate, Mughal Empire, and the Asaf Jahi Kingdom of the Nizams.

After Hyderabad was partitioned in 1956, the Bidar Fort became part of the Mysore state which is now Karnataka.

About Karnataka Board of Waqfs:

It is a statutory body constituted under the Waqf Act of 1995.

It controls all other waqf institutions like masjids, dargahs etc.
