Context:
Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a commemorative stamp and coin to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Birsa Munda in Bihar on November 15th.

Key points:

In 2021, the government of India declared November 15, Birsa Minda’s birth anniversary, as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.

The PM inaugurated two tribal freedom fighter museums and tribal research institutes.

The PM laid the foundation for various tribal welfare projects worth over Rs. 6,640 crore.

Foundation stones were laid for 1.41 lakh homes under the Dharti Aba Janjati Gram Utkarsh Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) scheme for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).

For a better healthcare system for tribals, around 50 mobile medical units were launched.

10 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) including hostels were inaugurated across India.

The PM interacted with the beneficiaries of the welfare schemes and also attended an exhibition honoring Birsa Munda and other tribal freedom fighters.

The exhibition includes artwork from EMRS students and literature on the life and struggles of Birsa Munda, as well as highlights the tribal history and achievements.

About Dharti Aba Janjati Gram Utkarsh Yojana:


Original name: PM Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PM-JUGA)

An umbrella scheme to implement the existing tribal welfare schemes.

It aims to address critical gaps in social infrastructure, health, education, and livelihood through interventions by the government.

About Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN):

It aims to improve the socio-economic condition of the PVTGs.

Implemented by: Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

It includes the establishment of Van Dhan Vikas Kendras for trading in forest produce, off-grid solar power systems for 1 lakh households, and solar street lights.
