Context: The Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2023 has been approved by the Union Cabinet.

Details

  • The Bill has not yet been made public in its full form; it will be introduced during the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.

2021 Draft Bill

  • In 2021, a draft Bill that was circulating called for up to three years in prison and a fine of 10 lahks for anyone who engaged in movie piracy.
  • It gave the government the authority to request a reexamination of previously approved films by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
  • There are currently three classifications for films: U for unrestricted exhibition, U/A for films that can be watched by kids with an adult's supervision, and A for films that are only meant to be seen by adults.
    • The U/A category was increased in the 2021 draft Bill to include U/A 7+, U/A 13+, and U/A 16+.
  • Age categories must be used by streaming services with content descriptions.
