Context

  • Easter was observed on Sunday, April 9, 2023. The day marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the major figure of Christianity, who was crucified by the Roman Cavalry and died on Good Friday.

About Easter

History

  • According to the Biblical story, after Jesus’ crucifixation, his body was wrapped in linen, and he as buried in the tomb owned by Joseph of Arimathea.
  • The tomb was then covered with a massive stone.
  • It is also believed that on Sunday morning, angels rolled the stone away, and Jesus walked out of the tomb.
  • To every Christian believer, the resurrection of Jesus symbolises his victory over sin and death.
  • The Gregorian Calendar is used by Western Christians, and Easter is observed each year on the Sunday after the full moon of March 21. 

Significance

  • Most Christians refer to the week leading up to Easter as Holy Week, which includes the days of the Easter Triduum, also known as the Paschal Triduum or The Three Days in Western Christianity.
  • Across the world, services are held on Easter, and typically people sing hymns dedicated to the festival.
  • Some believe that eggs represent birth and fertility and the belief carried on representing Jesus’ rebirth.
  • Easter bunnies also symbolise life and birth.
