Context:

Recently, the Malawi festival, also called the Tumaini, is celebrated uniting the refugees and locals through music, art, theatre and craft.

About the Malawi festival:

Founded in 2014, Tumaini is held every year within the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi.

This is the only festival of its kind in the world that is help within a refugee camp.

The festival is a combination of solidarity, community and culture as it is organized by the refugees.

It has been awarded with the Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award) in 2024.

About Dzaleka Refugee Camp:

Established in 1994 for the forcibly displaced people fleeing genocide, violence, and wars in Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

It also received refugees from other countries like Somalia.

The camp has become a platform for humanitarian efforts and cultural exchange, uplifting and empowering the refugees.

About Lake Nyasa:

This lake is shared by 3 countries: Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

It is the southernmost and third largest lake of the Eastern Rift Valley lakes of East Africa.

It is one of the African Great Lakes and is known for its clear waters and diversity of fishes, including the colourful cichlids. Thus it supports the local fisheries economically.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

About Cultures of Resistance Award (CoR Award):

Launched in 2020 by the founder/director of the COR Network, Iara Lee, a Brazilian of Korean descent.

The award recognizes creative citizens/organizations connected to positive changes in the world.

Context:

Recently, the Ningol Chakkouba festival was held with religious fervour and gaiety across Manipur.

About Ningol Chakkouba festival:

The Ningol Chakkouba is one of the biggest festivals of Manipur and the biggest festival of the Meitei community.

However, nowadays other communities have also started celebrating Chakkouba.

It is held every year on the second day of the lunar month of Hiyangei of the Meitei calendar.

Ningol’ means married woman and ‘chakkouba’ means an invitation to feast.

Married sisters visit their maternal homes for a grand feast and joyous reunion followed by giving away gifts.

The invitation comes from the son of the family, usually a week in advance.
