Context

• In its very first commercial mission, the GSLV-Mk III will launch the British startup OneWeb's 36 broadband satellites from Sriharikota spaceport.

GSLV-Mk III

• The GSLV-Mk III, also known as the Launch Vehicle Mark 3 (LVM3), is a three-stage vehicle with two solid motor strap-on, a liquid propellant core stage and a cryogenic stage.
• The rocket, GSLV-MK III is 43 meters tall and even though it is the heaviest among India’s operational launch vehicles, it is also the shortest. GSLV-Mk III weighs 641 tonnes, which is equal to the weight of five fully loaded passenger planes.
• GSLV can take 10,000-kg satellites to lower earth orbits.

1. First Stage: GS1

• The first stage uses solid rocket motor with four liquid engine strap-on motors. This stage generates maximum thrust of 4700 kilo Newton.

2. Second Stage: GS2

• The second stage uses a liquid rocket engine which is known as Vikas engine. It generates maximum thrust of 800 kilo Newton.

3. Third Stage: CUS

• The third stage uses a Cryogenic engine, which uses liquefied oxygen and hydrogen as fuel.

Payload to GTO: 4,000 kg

Payload to LEO: 8000 kg
