  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), under Intelligent Transportation System Endeavor for Indian Cities Phase-II initiative, has launched:
  1. An indigenous Onboard Driver Assistance and Warning System – ODAWS,
  2. Bus Signal Priority System and
  3. Common SMart IoT Connectiv (CoSMiC) software.
  • The product was developed as a joint initiative by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M). Mahindra and Mahindra was the industrial collaborator for the project.

 

What is an Intelligent Transportation System?

  • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is a technique devised to manage and regulate all problems related to traffic and locomotion in India.
  • The idea behind this system is to utilize information technology to enhance traffic management, be more mindful of the environment and scale down on time spent in commuting.

 

Achievements in India

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), had identified ITS as a major sector for investment in R&D and are funding ITS projects and programs since last two decades.
  • The Urban Traffic Control System (UTCS) and Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) funded by the Ministry and developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in early 2000 are landmark achievements in this domain.

 

ITS AND InTranSE

  • To synergize the transformation in ITS the Ministry brought together premier academic institutes like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Management (IIM) etc. and Premier R&D Centre like C-DAC under one umbrella.
  • Such an initiative formulated the Collaborative Intelligent Transportation Systems Endeavor for Indian Cities (InTranSE) during the year 2009-2012 (Phase-I).
  • The InTranSE Phase-II program (2019-2021) is aiming at undertaking R&D projects and it is an extension of the InTranSE Phase-I program.
  • C-DAC is functioning as the Nodal Centre to coordinate the R&D efforts of the collaborating agencies and will help them in productizing the results.

 

Recently announced Products under InTranSE Phase-II program

Onboard Driver Assistance and Warning System

  • As per the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways of India (MoRTH), in around 84 percent of cases, “driver error” was cited as the cause of the accident.
  • Onboard Driver Assistance and Warning System or ODAWS incorporates vehicle-borne sensors for monitoring driver propensity and vehicle surroundings to deliver acoustic and visual alerts for driver assistance.
  • The project involves the development of sub-modules such as the navigational unit, driver assistance console, and mmWave radar sensor.
  • The ODAWS algorithm is used to interpret sensor data and offer real-time notifications to the driver, boosting road safety.
  • With improved highway infrastructure and an increase in the number of vehicles, speed on roads has increased, further exacerbating safety concerns.
  • This assumes significance in the context of the potential for technology applications for assisting and warning drivers in minimizing driving errors.

 

Bus Signal Priority System

Background:

  • Poor reliability of the public transport system is a major reason for people to opt for personal vehicles.
  • Improving this is essential to attract more travelers to public transport, thus leading to a more sustainable traffic solution.
  • One of the major causes of delays for public transport buses in urban arterials is the delay at signalized intersections.

 

About the system:

  • A bus signal priority System is an operational strategy that modifies normal traffic signal operations to better accommodate in-service public buses at signal-controlled intersections.
  • Unlike a blind priority that is given for emergency vehicles, here it is a conditional priority, which is given only when there is an overall reduction in delay for all vehicles.
  • The developed system will enable to minimize of personal delay by providing priority to public transport buses.

Common SMart iot Connectiv (CoSMiC)

Background:

  • Development of a common Service Layer Software, conforming to global Standards is an important requirement for Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) applications such as traffic management, tolling, enforcement, access control systems etc.
  • With the advent of the Smart Cities project, most towns and cities in India are looking to implement ITS solutions based on IoT. In this context a major hurdle is the existence of multiple vendor specific standards which hinders interoperability and scalability.
  • Different types of Traffic Management devices and Application layer software are commercially available these days for different requirements in the field of Traffic Management.
  • Varied ITS solutions use different and specific hardware and software. This makes interoperability of the system complex.
  • A common standard which can integrate these solutions and present them on a single platform is absent today.

 

CoSMiC :

  • CoSMiC is an end-to-end Common Service Platform for integrating diverse IOT devices and applications to interact with a common global oneM2M standard on to the smart city framework.
  • It is used for data dissemination to different smart city applications in order to achieve interoperability and scalability among IOT devices.
  • oneM2M is the global communication standard which covers requirements, architecture, data sharing, API specifications, security solutions and interoperability for Machine to Machine and IoT technologies.
  • With IoT in view and for interoperable IoT applications, a consortium of more than 200 member organization including multinational companies, are working towards forming a common service layer standard known as oneM2M.
  • India is also a major member of the consortium. With this in view, CoSMiC common service layer is used to interface any vendor specific standards and for increasing interoperability with smart city dashboard.
