Context

  • According to a study published in Scientific Reports scientists have found a new mega predator, called Lorrainosaurus.

Details

  • Lorrainosaurus had a 4.3-foot-long jaw and torpedo-shaped body.
  • It belonged to the clade of pliosaurs called Thalassophonea or sea murderers, which existed 170 million years ago during the Age of Dinosaurs and have now been identified as the oldest known mega-predators of their time.

Pliosaurs were a type of aquatic reptile closely related to their long-necked counterparts, the plesiosaurs, resembling something like a brontosaurus with flippers instead of legs.

  • Lorrainosaurus, the oldest known large-bodied pliosaur, possessed jaws measuring over four feet in length, brimming with massive conical teeth.
  • Lorrainosaurus has a bulky, “torpedo-shaped” body and uses four flipper-like limbs to move around in its neverending quest for food.
  • “Lorrainosaurus was one of the first truly huge pliosaurs.
  • It gave rise to a dynasty of marine reptile mega-predators that ruled the oceans for around 80 million years.
