Context:

Mainland China authorities are viewed more positively in Macao than in Hong Kong, the other Chinese Special Administrative Region.

About Macau SAR China

  • Macau is a small, special administrative region (SAR) of China that operates under the One Country, Two Systems principle.

What is one country, two systems?

China has the constitutional principle “one country, two systems” for governing the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

According to this principle, both former colonies of Hong Kong and Macau will be allowed to have independent economic and political systems from that of mainland China, while still being a part of the country.

  • Location: It is located on the southwestern corner of the Pearl (Zhu) River estuary (at the head of which is the port of Guangzhou [Canton]) and stands opposite the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
  • Peninsula: It comprises a small narrow peninsula projecting from the mainland province of Guangdong and includes an area comprising the islands of Taipa and Coloane
  • Currency: The currency of Macau is the Macanese pataca.
  • Religion: The population is Buddhist and some belong to Daoism and Confucianism or combinations of the three.
  • Population:  Among the small population of Christians, the great majority belongs to Roman Catholics. About one-sixth of the population professes no religious affiliation. Macau has a relatively older population, with less than one-fourth being younger than age 25.
  • Economy and livelihood: The service sector dominates the economy, employing about three-fourths of the total labour force. There are few natural resources, an exception being fish in the Pearl River estuary, which are used for local needs.
      • Agriculture is minimal; small quantities of vegetables are grown, and there is some poultry raising (chickens and eggs).
  • Facts: Macau is a wealthy region and is considered the Las Vegas of Asia because of its tourism, gaming, and service industries. It is known as a tax haven for many investors, although the Chinese government has made efforts to stem capital outflows to the region.
