About

  • The Prime Minister of India called for preparing a plan to develop Mangarh Dham in Rajasthan as a tribal destination.
  • Mangarh Dham is a hilly area located in the Banswara district, in Rajasthan.
    • The area is situated near the Rajasthan-Gujarat boundary.
  • Mangarh Dham is also known for the tribal people massacred by the British Indian Army in 1913.
    • Nearly 1,500 Bhil tribals and forest dwellers were killed in the Mangarh hill massacre when the British Indian Army opened fire on the protesters.
    • The protesters were demanding the abolition of bonded labour system and reducing agricultural taxes imposed by princely states rulers.
    • The tribes were led by saint Govind Guru.
  • Prime Minister said that the Mangarh Dham is a shared heritage of the people of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra; the governments of the four States need to work together and prepare a road map to create the memorial site.
  • The Prime Minister also announced that a memorial will be established at the place as a symbol of the bravery and sacrifice of tribal people.
