Context

National Farmer's Day is being observed to commemorate the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and his contributions towards the upliftment of farmers in the country.

National Farmer’s Day

National Farmers Day, also known as Kisan Diwas, is celebrated on December 23 to commemorate and recognize farmers as the country's backbone.
This day was chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Choudhary Charan Singh, India's fifth Prime Minister.
Every year, National Farmer's Day is observed in states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh, where farmers are actively involved in agriculture.
Farmers work around the clock and year-round to guarantee people do not starve to death or die of hunger, yet they struggle to consume at least two square meals every day. Every year, Farmer's Day is observed to raise awareness of and thank farmers for their contributions to society.

History of National Farmers Day:

Chaudhary Charan Singh, the Kisan Leader, was president from July 28, 1979 until January 14, 1980. His publications on farmers and their difficulties provided a variety of suggestions to improve farmers' lives across the country. He also launched various farmer welfare programmes. In celebration of Charan Singh's birth anniversary, the government celebrated Kisan Diwas in 2001.
Following in the footsteps of India's second Prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shastri, who gave the farmers the iconic phrase "JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN,".
Charan Singh saw how affluent landowners, or zamindars, exploited farmers, and how this harmed the rural economy. He was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1937 and resolved to demolish such exploitative structures.
As a parliamentary secretary and then as a Revenue Minister for Land Reforms in Uttar Pradesh in the 1950s, Charan Singh developed land reform laws. After openly criticizing Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's land policy for India's development, the peasant population in the country came to look up to him.
Several works, including 'Abolition of Zamindari,' 'Joint Farming X-rayed,' 'India's Poverty and its Solution,' and 'Peasant Proprietorship,' were written by Charan Singh to emphasise the farmers' cause.

Significance of National Farmer's Day

India is a nation of villages and abundant agriculture. The majority of the rural population in the country is made up of farmers or individuals who work in agriculture. A sizable portion of the nation's soldiers is descended from agrarian households.
The purpose of Kisan Diwas is to honor the passion and surrender of farmers each year. Additionally, it means that we have to take care of their social and monetary well-being. The day also emphasizes giving farmers access to the most recent agricultural research.
