Fishing Industry in India

  • In India, fishing and aquaculture are key sources of food production, nutrition, employment, and money.
  • More than 20 million fishermen and fish growers rely on the fisheries industry for a living; it generates INR 1.75 trillion in yearly gross value added for India's economy; and it is a key export earner, with fish being one of the most important agricultural commodities exported from the country.

Methods of Fish Production

  • Capture Fishery
  • Capture fishing is used to gather naturally existing fish.
  • Capture fishing is often referred to as wild fishing.
  • Culture Fishery
  • The controlled growing of fish in aquatic bodies is known as aquaculture.
  • It's important to note that pisciculture is a kind of aquaculture, which is defined as the scientific growing and management of all aquatic creatures.
  • Inland Fishery
  • Freshwater bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, and tanks are used for this.
  • Inland fisheries are formed by reservoirs where freshwater and seawater meet.
  • Marine Fishery:
  • Due to the fact that India is a peninsula, we have a coastline of 7517 kilometres.
  • As a result, 14 million people rely on fishing for a living.
  • These 14 million individuals cast their fishing nets in marine fisheries, i.e. in sea and ocean waters.

What are the advantages of Fish Farming?

  • For human consumption, farmed fish delivers high-quality protein.
  • Fish farming may be included into an existing farm to increase revenue and improve water management.
  • Farmers may choose which fish species to produce based on their desired traits.
  • A pond's fish are not available to everyone. As a result, they are safe and may be picked whenever they choose.

India is home to more than 10% of the world's fish variety and is the world's second-largest producer of total fish. Pisciculture has immense potential to feed the ever-increasing human population in the current period of food instability. Aquaculture that is environmentally benign and meets the socioeconomic demands of society must be developed.
