Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) Report

Context

• Recently, the Labour and Employment Ministry released the third Quarterly Employment Survey (QES) report.

 

Highlights of the report

• The Report indicates increasing trend in employment in organized segment, employing 10 or more workers, of the selected nine sectors.
• Almost all (99.4%) establishments were registered under different statutes.
• Over four lakh jobs were created in firms with 10 or more workers in nine selected sectors in October-December 2021.
• Employment had increased from 3.10 crore in July-September 2021 to 3.145 crore in the next quarter.

 

Note: The survey covered manufacturing, construction, trade, transport, education, health, accommodation and restaurants, IT/BPOs and financial services. These nine sectors accounted for 85% of the employment in units with 10 or more workers. The survey does not include units that were established after 2013-2014.

 

• ‘Manufacturing’ sector is the largest employer accounting for around 39% of the estimated total number of workers followed by Education Sector 22%.
• The nine sectors reported 1.85 lakh vacancies cross different sectors, with 81,846 in manufacturing, 47,076 in health and 39,014 in education.
• The report stated that 5% of the vacancies were “in the process of being filled up”.
• About 4% of the vacancies remained due to “non-availability of requisite skilled workers”.
• Overall around 23.55% of units provided on-the-job training to their workers.
• Among 9 sectors, 34.87% of units in health sector provided on-the-job training, followed by IT/BPOs at 31.1%.
• 3% of the workers were Regular workers and 8.9% contract workers.

• The report of “Quarterly Employment Survey” is an important publication meant to give insights into the change of employment over the previous quarters and many other related parameters.
• This serves as a useful data for policy-makers, Central/ State Governments officials, researchers and other stakeholders.
