Red panda

Context:

• An endangered species, Red panda was recently captured on camera in the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary (EWS).

Eaglenest or Eagle's Nest Wildlife Sanctuary:

• It is a protected area of India in the Himalayan foothills of West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh.
• It conjoins Sessa Orchid Sanctuary to the northeast and Pakhui Tiger Reserve across the Kameng river to the east.
• It is a part of the Kameng Elephant Reserve.
• Eaglenest derives its name from the Red Eagle Division of the Indian army which was posted in the area in the 1950s.
• Established: 1989.

Biodiversity:

• Flora: The park is rich in diverse plant species, including temperate and subtropical forests, bamboo groves, and rhododendron thickets.
• Fauna: It is home to a variety of wildlife, including several species of mammals like the red panda, Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, and clouded leopard.
• Avifauna: Eaglenest is renowned for its bird diversity, hosting over 450 bird species. It is a significant birding destination, famous for the discovery of the Bugun liocichla, a bird species new to science found here in 2006.
