Sariska, Ranthambore tiger reserves

Context: The Indian State of Forest Report, has revealed that the Ranthambore and Sariska tiger reserves in Rajasthan have registered a decrease in their forest cover over the last decade.

Reasons attributed to shrinking of forest cover are

• encroachments for agriculture
• unchecked grazing of animals over extensive areas
• tourism and forest fires
• spread of the invasive shrubs of Prosopis juliflora

Sariska tiger reserves

• Located in:
• It is the first reserve in the world with successfully relocated tigers.
• It is an important biodiversity area in the Northern Aravalli leopard and wildlife corridor.
• It is a part of the Aravalli Range and the Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests ecoregion.

Ranthambore National Park

• Located in: Rajasthan.
• It is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River.
• It is named after the historic Ranthambore Fort, which lies within the park.
