Context: On May 16, 1975, Sikkim officially merged with India and became the 22nd state of the country. This day is celebrated every year as Sikkim Statehood Day to commemorate this historic event and to acknowledge the aspirations and achievements of the people of Sikkim.

Details

Sikkim is a small but beautiful state in the northeastern part of India, bordering Nepal, China and Bhutan. It is known for its natural beauty, rich cultural diversity and organic farming.
Sikkim Statehood Day is a day to remember the sacrifices and struggles of those who fought for democracy and integration with India.

Integration of Sikkim with India

It was ruled by various dynasties and kingdoms, such as the Namgyal dynasty, the Chogyal monarchy and the British Raj.
Sikkim was also a protectorate of India since 1950, which meant that India was responsible for its defence and foreign affairs. However, Sikkim retained its autonomy and had its constitution, flag and national anthem.
In the early 1970s, there was a growing demand for democracy and integration with India among the people of Sikkim, especially the Nepali-speaking majority.
- This led to a series of political movements and protests that challenged the authority of the Chogyal (king) Palden Thondup Namgyal.
In 1973, a violent uprising broke out in Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, which was suppressed by the Indian Army.
In 1974, a referendum was held in Sikkim, in which 97.5% of the voters favoured abolishing the monarchy and joining India as a state.
In 1975, after obtaining the consent of the Chogyal and the approval of the Indian Parliament, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India by the 36th Amendment of the Constitution of India.
On May 15, 1975, the President of India signed a constitutional amendment that abolished Sikkim's monarchy and made it the 22nd state of India.
On May 16, 1975, Sikkim officially became a part of India and celebrated its first statehood day.
