Near Amarkantak Hill in the Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district of Chhattisgarh.

Flows Into

Merges with the Ganges River near Patna in Bihar.

Nature of flow

Rain-fed.

Flows through (States)

500 km lies in the Madhya Pradesh, 82 km in Uttar Pradesh and remaining 202 km in Jharkhand and Bihar.

784 km.

Catchment area

71,259 km2.

River Cource and valley

Cuts through the Kaimur Range before merger with the Ganges.

The Son Valley is an extension of  the Narmada River valley.

 

Soil

Major groups of soils of the Son basin are red yellow soil, red sandy soil and younger alluvial soil.

Ganges (Right)  (the 2nd-largest tributary after Yamuna).

The Rihand River, the Koel River, Gopad River, the Kanhar River.

The Koel River is the largest tributary.
