Context: According to the state minister for defence, since 2018–19, defence imports have decreased from 46% to 36.7%. He disclosed that over 26 thousand defence goods have been uploaded to the SRIJAN Portal and made available to the industry for indigenization.

Details

  • In the Rajya Sabha, the State Minister for the defence claimed that from 2018–19, defence imports have decreased from 46% to 36.7%.
  • The Minister disclosed that the SRIJAN Portal now contains approximately 26,000 defence products that have been presented to the industry for indigenization.
  • According to the minister, the government has announced four Positive Indigenization Lists, which include 411 important military platforms and systems, to encourage self-reliance.
  • According to him, indigenization is a dynamic process, and more than 7,000 products that serve both the domestic and international markets have already undergone it.

SRIJAN Portal

  • The Department of Defence Production Portal "SRIJAN" was virtually inaugurated by the defence minister as part of the Make in India initiatives in the defence industry during the Ministry of Defense's "Atmanirbhar Bharat Week" celebrations in August 2020.
  • The portal offers details on the defence products and equipment that the country's defences Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are now importing or plan to import. The government will take the appropriate steps To make these products indigenous.
  • The portal is a "one-stop shop" internet platform that gives suppliers access to take up things that can be taken up for indigenization.
  • The portal systematically presents data, including item names, images and specifications, import values, etc. There is a search function as well.
  • In its initial phase, the platform listed products having import values of Rs 1 million or more. There were 1557 such articles in 2019–20, but there were only 739 in 2020–21.
