Description

Origin

The Subernarekha River rises near Nagri village in the Ranchi District of Jharkhand at an elevation of 600 m.

Length

It flows for a length of 395 km.

The Basin

The basin extends over States of Jharkhand, Odisha and comparatively smaller part in West Bengal having a total area of 29,196 Sq.km.

Basin Boundary:

It is bounded by the Chhotanagpur plateau on the north and the west, by the ridges separating it from Baitarani basin on the south and by the Kasai Valley of Kangsabati River on the east.

Fall into

Bay of Bengal.

Tributaries

The prominent tributaries of the Subarnarekha are Kharkai, Roro, Kanchi, Harmu Nadi, Damra, Karru, Chinguru, Karakari, Gurma, Garra, Singaduba, Kodia, Dulunga and Khaijori.

Climate

The basin is generally influenced by the South-West monsoon.

Dams

Baura Dam, Galudih Barrage, Haladia Dam, Jambhira Dam, Jaleswar Barrage.

Falls

The Hundru Falls (Ranchi) is created on the course of the Subarnarekha River, where is falls from a height of 320 feet creating the highest water falls of the Jharkhand state.

Wildlife sanctuary

The entire Forests of Dalma wildlife Sanctuary falls in the catchment of Subarnarekha River and Dimna Lake of Jamshedpur.

Threat to the river

Extensive mining of copper and uranium ores and aluminum factory.

Threat from the river

Flash floods following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the river.
