Context

  • Union Minister for Environment Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav addressed the valedictory session at the "Conference on Environmental Diversity and Environmental Jurisprudence: National and International Perspective" held at Chandigarh University, Mohali.
  • The minister calls for the need to strike balance between development on one side and a pollution-free environment on the other and thus emphasizes ‘sustainable development.

About Sustainable Development

  • The development which satisfies the needs of the present generation without affecting the needs of the future generation is called sustainable development.
  • Sustainable development (SD) calls for concerted efforts toward building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and the planet.
  • There are three core elements of sustainable development:
    • Environmental sustainability
    • Social sustainability
    • Economic sustainability

About Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • To bring sustainable development into the mainstream United Nations (UN) launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDGs.
  • This universal, integrated and transformative agenda aims to spur actions that will end poverty and build a more sustainable world over the next 15 years.
  • There are 17 goals and 169 targets specific targets to be achieved by 2030. Reaching the goals requires action on all fronts – governments, businesses, civil society and people everywhere all have a role to play.
  • SDGs are not legally binding.
