Context

Union Minister for Environment Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav addressed the valedictory session at the "Conference on Environmental Diversity and Environmental Jurisprudence: National and International Perspective" held at Chandigarh University, Mohali.
The minister calls for the need to strike balance between development on one side and a pollution-free environment on the other and thus emphasizes ‘sustainable development.

About Sustainable Development

The development which satisfies the needs of the present generation without affecting the needs of the future generation is called sustainable development.
Sustainable development (SD) calls for concerted efforts toward building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for people and the planet.
There are three core elements of sustainable development:
- Environmental sustainability
- Social sustainability
- Economic sustainability

About Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

To bring sustainable development into the mainstream United Nations (UN) launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDGs.
This universal, integrated and transformative agenda aims to spur actions that will end poverty and build a more sustainable world over the next 15 years.
There are 17 goals and 169 targets specific targets to be achieved by 2030. Reaching the goals requires action on all fronts – governments, businesses, civil society and people everywhere all have a role to play.
