Context:

Indian Rare Earths Limited, (IREL) and Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium and Magnesium Plant JSC, (UKTMP JSC) Kazakhstan Signed an Agreement to Establish Indo-Kazakh Joint Venture Company (JVC): IREUK Titanium Limited for production of Ti Slag in India.

About Titanium

Titanium is a metal that is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, following aluminium, iron, and magnesium. It has similar strength to steel but is about half the weight. It naturally occurs as oxides like ilmenite and rutile.

Properties: It is a lightweight, high-strength, low-corrosion structural metal and is used in alloy form for parts in high-speed aircraft.

Ores of Titanium: Rutile (Ti02), ilmenite (FeTiO3).

Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the earth's crust and can be found in nearly all rocks and sediments. It is a lithophile element with a strong affinity for oxygen and is not found as a pure metal in nature. China produces the highest amount of titanium in the world.

What is another name for titanium?

Titanium has many names, some of which are based on its properties. For example, “Wonder Metal” praises titanium’s incredible flexibility, tensile strength, low density, and corrosion resistance. It is precisely because of these excellent physical properties that it is widely used in the aerospace field, and is also called “aerospace metal”.

Application: Titanium(IV) oxide is used in sunscreens because it prevents UV light from reaching the skin. It has a wide range of applications, including in aerospace, defense, energy, and consumer products.

Regions: Significant titanium-bearing ilmenite deposits exist in Australia, Canada, China, India, Mozambique, New Zealand, Norway, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Ukraine.

PRACTICE QUESTION

Q.Consider the following statements about titanium:

  1. It is a strong, lightweight metal with excellent corrosion resistance, making it ideal for aerospace and medical applications.
  2. It is primarily obtained from the mineral bauxite.

Which of the above-given points is/are correct?

(a) 1 only

(b) 2 only

(c) Both 1 and 2

(d) Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: a

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: Titanium is indeed a strong, lightweight metal known for its excellent corrosion resistance. These properties make it ideal for applications in aerospace, medical implants, and marine industries.

Statement 2 is incorrect: Titanium is not primarily obtained from bauxite, which is the primary ore for aluminum. Titanium is primarily extracted from ores like rutile (TiO₂) and ilmenite (FeTiO₃).
