Context: UDAN marks its sixth anniversary, symbolizing the government's steadfast commitment to enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in remote and underserved regions, fostering inclusivity and accessibility in the country's aviation sector.

UDAN

• UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) is a government-backed initiative launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) on October 21, 2016.
• The primary goal of UDAN is to improve air connectivity and infrastructure in remote and underserved regions of India.

Objective and Focus

• UDAN aims to enhance air travel accessibility in areas with limited or no air connectivity.
• It targets underserved airports, encouraging airlines to operate on these routes, thereby fulfilling the aspirations of common citizens who previously had limited access to air travel.

Phases of Implementation

• UDAN 1.0: 5 airlines were awarded 128 flight routes to 70 airports, including 36 newly made operational airports.
• UDAN 2.0: 73 underserved and unserved airports were announced, and helipads were connected for the first time.
• UDAN 3.0: Introduced tourism routes, seaplanes, and expanded connectivity in the North-East Region.
