Context

The government is in the process of creating unique identification (ID) of farmers who have availed agricultural schemes.

About

The unique identifier of the farmer will link the farmer profile with all the agricultural schemes, which have been availed by the farmer.
The government is in the process of preparing a Farmers Database across the country.
Only farmers included in the database will be able to avail the benefits.

Significance

With the help of Unique Identity Card, farmers will be able to avail the benefits of various schemes of Central and State Government without any hassle.
Farmers no longer need any intermediaries to avail the benefits of the government scheme.
The scheme of making identity cards has a provision of verification of farmers by e-Know Your Farmers (e-KYF).
With this, there will be no need to submit documents frequently in different departments and offices to avail benefits under different schemes.
It will also provide access to field-based and customised advisories as well as ease the process of accessing the damage to crops due to extreme weather condition.
