About Uniyala Multibracteata

Uniyala multibracteata, locally known as Kattupoovamkurunnila, is a rare tree species endemic to specific regions in the Western Ghats.
The species was first discovered by R.H. Beddome in Peerumade in 1880. However, it was not observed or collected for 140 years, leading scientists to speculate about its extinction.
The species was rediscovered in non-protected areas of Wagamon, highlighting the importance of biodiversity conservation beyond designated conservation zones.
Kattupoovamkurunnila is described as a small tree or large shrub, reaching heights of 2 to 5 meters.
Its leaves are covered with cottony hairs, and it produces beautiful flowers from October to January.
The species grow in evergreen forests and rocky grasslands at elevations of 1,200 meters above sea level.
