Context: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have jointly identified seven initiatives worldwide as World Restoration Flagships, aiming to address ecosystem degradation caused by wildfires, drought, deforestation, and pollution through restoration efforts.

About World Restoration Flagships

  • The World Restoration Flagships are a group of seven initiatives that have been recognized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for their outstanding work in restoring ecosystems around the world.
  • These initiatives are all working to address the global challenge of ecosystem degradation, which is a major threat to biodiversity, human well-being, and the climate.

7 World Restoration Flagships

  • The Restoring Mediterranean Forests Initiative: This initiative is working to restore forests in Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, and Türkiye. It has already restored 2 million hectares of forests and plans to restore an additional 8 million hectares by 2030.
  • The Living Indus Initiative: This initiative is working to restore the Indus River basin in Pakistan. It aims to restore 25 million hectares of the basin by 2030, which would cover 30% of Pakistan's surface area.
  • The Acción Andina initiative: This initiative is working to restore forests in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It aims to restore 1 million hectares of forests and protect an additional 11,000 hectares by 2030.
  • The Sri Lanka Mangrove Regeneration Initiative: This initiative is working to restore mangroves in Sri Lanka. It has already restored 500 hectares of mangroves and plans to restore an additional 10,000 hectares by 2030.
  • The Terai Arc Landscape initiative: This initiative is working to restore forests in the Terai Arc Landscape, which is a critical corridor for wildlife in Nepal and India. It has already restored 66,800 hectares of forests and plans to restore an additional 350,000 hectares by 2030.
  • Regreening Africa's agriculture: This initiative is working to improve the productivity of agricultural land in Africa by restoring degraded soils and forests. It is expected to benefit over 6 million households.
  • Growing forests in Africa's drylands: This initiative is working to expand forests in Africa's drylands. It aims to restore 229,000 hectares of forests by 2030.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)

●UNEP was established in 1972 and is the leading global environmental authority within the United Nations system.

It focuses on a wide range of environmental issues, including climate change, biodiversity, pollution, sustainable consumption and production, ecosystem management, and more. It plays a coordinating role in various environmental conventions and initiatives.

●It collaborates with governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and other UN entities to address environmental challenges collectively. It also provides scientific assessments and policy advice to inform decision-making.

It produces regular reports and assessments, including the Global Environment Outlook (GEO), to provide comprehensive analyses of the state of the environment and emerging environmental issues.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)

It was founded in 1945 and is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is dedicated to eradicating hunger, achieving food security, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

FAO's primary mandate is to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, enhance the lives of rural populations, and contribute to the growth of the world economy.

●It works across various areas related to food and agriculture, including agricultural development, fisheries, forestry, land and water resources, climate change, food safety, and nutrition. It provides technical assistance, policy advice, and capacity-building support.
